Blog entry #5 what are you eating?
Do you ever think about where your food comes from? How your meat gets from the farm to your kitchen tabel? The difference between how organic and big time farm companies treat their animals is astounding! Overcrowding, diseases, and mutations are all results of big time farm companies trying to make fast money the incorrect way.
Over crowding animals is the first problem with raising animals to slaughter. Farmers should have enough space for the animals to roam around freely. The problem with big time farm companies is they’re animals never see life outside of a cage. As for organic companies, they have acres of land that animals can roam on or be hearded around. Organic companies tend to be smaller in numbers because they care for the animals and have respect for nature.
When big time farmers over crowd animals they become more prone to diseases. Zoonosis is a disease that is transeferrable from animals to humans. Some of these diseases can show different symptoms in animals and humans. Mad Cow disease is a deadly disease found in infected cow meat. Mad cow is formed from cows eating other cows, this is common in big farming companies to save money on feed. Organic food industries don’t have as many diseases because the animals aren’t over crowded.
Big time farming industries are all about making the most money and convincing themselves. That being said, it’s no suprise that they feed they’re animals food with antibiotics already made into it. This is because diseases are so common they have to treat they’re animals with medication to be able to be consumable. Organic meat doesn’t have all of these added medications and feed because they don’t have diseases due to the overcrowding. Organic farmers rely on Mother Nature to feed the animals. By moving them through the acres of land like migration the farmers can imitate Mother Nature. This process is a lot longer but in the long run cheaper because farmers don’t have to spend money on feed.
Lastly when farmers have mass productions of animals they can mutate and become immune to medications. When farmers give a species a specific medication to block an infection, the infection can grow more powerful and become immune to the medication. Leading to a monster bread that is inedible and toxic. Although organic products are a slower process they don’t have to encounter all these extra problems like big time farming companies.
Overall we can come to the conclusion that organic and free range meat is way better for consumers and animals. If consumers purchase more organic items then we can make a statement to the bigger farming companies that they need to change! It may be convenient and cheaper to buy regular meat, but what’s better for you? People should care about what they’re consuming and have some kind of knowledge of where it’s coming from. Now that you know, what are you going to do about it?

I appreciate you having examples and definitions of real diseases that humans and animals can get from this kind of behavior.
ReplyDeleteI feel and think that I am disgusted with knowing bigger companies mostly care about money. What grossed me out is how they will still feed us sick animals. However, I do consume regular meat and eat at fast food places on occasion. I’m going to try to get into educating myself on organics and how to eat better meat.
ReplyDeleteI would have liked to see some more direct references to the film in this post in addition to the information you provide here.
